Immune System
Vitamin C
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is an antioxidant and therefore protects your body cells from damage. Vitamin C is also necessary for the formation of connective tissue, the absorption of iron and the maintenance of the resistance.
With a long-term severe deficiency, reduced resistance, delayed wound healing and eventually scurvy can occur. The symptoms are gum bleeding, subcutaneous and internal bleeding. Although you pass out an excess of vitamin C, you can get complaints if you ingest a lot of vitamin C. More than 2 grams of vitamin C per day can lead to intestinal complaints or diarrhea and an increased excretion of oxalic acid in the urine. In the past, this was thought to increase the risk of developing kidney stones, but this has never been confirmed in research.
Vitamin D3
Vitamin D is needed to absorb calcium from food into the body. It is therefore important for the growth and maintenance of strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D also plays a role in the proper functioning of the muscles and the immune system.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Vitamin D is one of the few vitamins that the body can make itself. Sunlight is the most important source of Vitamin D. Under the influence of sunlight, the body can produce Vitamin D itself in the skin. Vitamin D is also found in food: mainly in oily fish, and with somewhat lower levels in meat and eggs. Vitamin D is added to low-fat margarine, margarine and baking and roasting products.
The advice is to take extra Vitamin D for young children, the elderly, people with a tinted skin color, people who don’t get out much and pregnant women.
Vitamin D occurs in the diet in 2 forms: Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2) and Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). Both Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3 are used in supplements and fortified foods. Both forms are active, so they do their job in our body. Preferably choose a supplement with Vitamin D3, the more active form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 therefore has a slightly stronger effect than Vitamin D2.
The daily amount of Vitamin D you need is laid down, in the form of a Reference Intake (RI), in European legislation. The Dutch Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) deviates from the European guideline. The RI is set at 400 IU, while in the Netherlands 200 IU may also be used as the RDA. IU stands for “International Unit”. The conversion factor from IU to mcg differs per type of vitamin, for Vitamin D this is 1 IU = 0.025 mcg.
A deficiency of Vitamin D can cause rickets (English disease) in young children. This disease causes skeletal abnormalities. In adults and the elderly, a vitamin D deficiency can eventually lead to bone loss or osteoporosis and/or muscle weakness.
Too high a vitamin D intake can only occur as a result of taking too many supplements for a long time. Long-term use of high doses above the acceptable upper limit (see nutritional advice below) can lead to calcium deposits in the body. This can lead to kidney damage. This does not play a role with a normal diet and following the advice for intake. Long-term exposure to sunlight also does not pose a risk of an excess of Vitamin D. The skin then regulates its production. In practice, an overdose in healthy people is rare.
Vitamin D3 from Botanical Vitamins is supplied by a Dutch supplier and is made from lanolin. Lanolin is the fat found in the wool of sheep. This vitamin D3 is therefore suitable for vegetarians.
Zinc
Zinc is part of many enzymes in the body. Enzymes are substances that are necessary to enable processes in the body. Zinc ensures the construction of proteins, growth and renewal of tissue, the metabolism and the proper functioning of the immune and defense systems.
Zinc is found in small amounts in many different foods, such as meat, cheese, grain products, nuts and seafood such as shrimp and mussels.
In the Netherlands there are no known cases of people with symptoms of a zinc deficiency. It is virtually impossible to get too much zinc through food. If you take a high dose of zinc tablets every day for a long time, a copper deficiency can develop.
