What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera), the first recognized herb of Ayurveda, is often called the “king of all herbs” and has been used and cultivated in India for centuries. This botanical herb is a natural powerhouse and stands central to the Ayurvedic lifestyle. In Ayurveda, Withania Somnifera, also known as Ashwagandha or Indian Ginseng, is considered a “rasayana” herb, which means “path of the essence” in Sanskrit. According to Ayurveda, rasayana herbs extend life span and ensure a natural balance in the body. Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used to help maintain a healthy balance between body and mind.

Ayurvedic medicine (“Ayurveda” for short) is one of the world’s oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit, but this does not automatically mean that the health benefits are recognized by EU regulations.

Properties

Withanolides are an important bioactive component of Ashwagandha. According to Ayurvedic, Ashwagandha is more than just a high Withanolide herb. The synergistic effects of the various components are very important for extracting the maximum efficacy from this premium herb. Ashwagandha extract must contain at least the bioactive substances Withanolide glycosides and Oligosaccharides.

Withanolide glycosides are a group of naturally occurring compounds found in various plants, not just in Ashwagandha (Indian Ginseng) but also in, for example, Panax Ginseng. Withanolide glycosides support the immune system and help with stress. Withanolide glycosides have hundreds of metabolites; however, the predominant bioactive substances are Withaferin A, Withaferin D, and Withanone. Withaferin A is one of the most studied withanolides and supports the health of the heart, brain, and a healthy immune response.

Withaferin A, as a potent antioxidant, is a crucial part of the broad-spectrum formula, but also much debated. Withaferin A can be too potent in high doses, reducing effectiveness and increasing the chance of side effects. Therefore, extensive toxicity studies have been conducted to ensure that Withaferin A and other Withanolides are not toxic to healthy cells when consumed in a reasonable dosage. No side effects were found at doses up to 2g/kg/day standardized to three percent Withaferin A.

Oligosaccharides are a bioactive component of Ashwagandha often overlooked. Oligosaccharides are a type of carbohydrate essential for normal cellular function. Oligosaccharides also contribute to the soluble fiber content that supports digestion and heart health. Soluble fibers are crucial for healthy digestion and can act as a prebiotic to help maintain healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Including soluble fibers as part of a healthy diet supports healthy cardiovascular function.

In Ayurvedic thought, all parts of the plant and root are used to create a broad-spectrum formula for a wide application and optimal efficacy. There are many misconceptions about using the plant part (the leaves) of Withania Somnifera. Providers of Ashwagandha only root extracts cast the use of the leaves in a bad light; there would be less research into the effect of the leaf than

the root, there would be fewer active substances in the leaf, the leaf would reduce the effectiveness. What are these statements based on, ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, right?

Ashwagandea is one of the most researched adaptogenic herbs, both leaf and root are represented in many studies. The leaf does not contain fewer active ingredients, research has also shown that the Ashwagandha leaves and roots contain different concentrations of the various active substances. Using the leaf in a leaf/root broad-spectrum formula increases the concentration of Withanolide glycosides. But the Ashwagandha leaves also contain a high concentration of Withaferin A, the high concentration is so high that it would reduce the effectiveness.

The Ashwagandha leaves complement the various active substances and/or increase the concentration so that a broad-spectrum formula is created as intended in Ayurvedic thought. It is important to standardize the concentration of Withaferin A at a non-toxic level so that this powerful antioxidant has its proper actions in the formula.

Standardized by the Sensoril® method

Sensoril® Ashwagandha is developed and produced by Natreon in the Indian city of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta). Natreon’s botanical ingredients are derived from nature and based on traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine. The extracts are purified and standardized using patented technology resulting in optimal levels of bioactive components. All their ingredients are patent-protected and have been tested in multiple clinical trials to ensure safety, efficacy, and authenticity. Natreon has been a leader in the nutraceutical industry for over 20 years with extensive expertise in botanical cultivation and extraction.

Sensoril® Ashwagandha is an adaptogen derived from a unique blend of both leaves and roots of the Withania Somnifera plant, using a completely natural water extraction process, to provide optimal efficacy and bioactive diversity. This patented extract, with water solubility of over 95%. Sensoril®, as the original holistic ashwagandha extract, is GRAS-affirmed, non-GMO verified, and organically certified.

Ashwagandha is grown in Central and North-West India. Ashwagandha seeds are sown under a thin layer of sand in a nursery bed before the summer monsoon season begins around June. After about 40 days, the seedlings are transplanted to a field where they grow to full maturity. They are harvested when the plants have developed berries and the leaves are dry, about 160 to 180 days after sowing. Ashwagandha has been extracted from wild plants in India for thousands of years. Natreon continues this tradition, Sensoril® Ashwagandha is sourced from Madhya Pradesh in central India, and the organic varieties come from certified organic farms in India. These farms provide a sustainable sourcing method that benefits the local farmers, improving their livelihood and the local economy.

Quality is ensured by a holistic extract, by selecting the correct chemotype and genotype of the plant, sourcing from the correct geographical area, harvesting at the right time, using both leaves and roots, and optimizing the extraction process. The specifications for the bioactive level are: Withanolide glycosides ≥10%, Oligosaccharides ≥32% and Withaferin A ≤0.5%, a patented composition. Quality control is carried out using the latest analytical techniques, such as HPLC and UPLC.

Suitable for vegetarians, easy to swallow & free from unhealthy additives

Ashwagandha Sensoril® is encapsulated in vegan HPMC capsules. HPMC stands for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and is made from cellulose. The substance is derived from wood. Cellulose is essentially

an indigestible plant fiber and is recognized as such by our body. HPMC is similar to cellulose but is much more soluble and is considered safe for human consumption.

Capsules containing botanical extracts are usually size #00, length 24 mm, diameter 9 mm. There is a large group of people who find it difficult to easily swallow this capsule size. The capsules used for Ashwagandha Sensoril® are size #1, length 19 mm, diameter 7 mm. By not using unnecessary additives and spreading the reference intake doses over more capsules, we can use this easily swallowable size.

Because Ashwahandha extract is ‘extremely’ sticky, the anti-caking agent magnesium stearate is added so that the Ashwagandha remains workable. In addition, Ashwagandha Sensoril® contains gluten-free organic rice flour as a filler. These additions have no side effects. Magnesium stearate is sometimes reported to hinder absorption by the body because magnesium stearate would encase the active substance. This is not proven, but it is possible that the story came into the world because some producers use the ‘cheaper’ substance magnesium stearate also as a filler. And thus unnecessary amounts of magnesium stearate are used. The use of gluten-free organic rice flour and magnesium stearate in Ashwagandha Sensoril® is minimal and only used to ensure a consistent dose of Ashwagandha is filled in the capsules.
