The Coordination Point Assessment and Monitoring of New Drugs (CAM Coordination Point Assessment and Monitoring of New Drugs), in collaboration with the Committee on Risk Assessment for New Drugs, prepared a quick scan in 2019 about Phenibut.

“In recent years, the interest in the use of Phenibut has increased. In the Netherlands, the number of reports of addiction, withdrawal symptoms and intoxication due to phenibut use has also increased. The number of these reports is still small. Many of the intoxications were much higher doses of Phenibut taken than in clinical studyies. In addition, in almost half of the cases, other drugs were taken in addition to Phenibut.”

“Due to the potential health risk associated with the use of Phenibut, the Risk Assessment Committee is currently recommending new drugs to continue monitoring their use. The Commission is also concerned that Phenibut is readily available in supplements on the Internet, while the web shops do not warn about the side effects, dependence and/or tolerance that can occur with phenibut use, which is why the Commission advises to warn the user group about the negative sides of the drug.”
